Someone I Know Needs Help

Writer: Unique BlessingsUnique Blessings

If you know or suspect that someone in your community is a victim of human trafficking, you can help, but be careful. Observe the situation from a safe distance and let the victim approach you. This may seem like a slow process, but there are reasons for this suggestion. Most trafficking victims are being watched by their trafficker and approaching them directly could put you both in danger. Take action, but be safe.

Before you do anything, be sure to learn the signs of human trafficking. Report information to the authorities or a trusted source, but know what to look out for.

If someone you know is exhibiting any of the following behavior(s), don’t be afraid to step in and ask questions. But remember, observe first and then report.

  • Unstable family life and at risk of being homeless or running away from home

  • Severe family or personal issues like drug addiction, alcoholism, or abuse

  • Signs of fear, anxiety, depression, tension, or nervousness

  • Paranoid behavior

  • Interest in relationships with older men or sketchy individuals

  • Having clothes or items that are way more expensive than they can afford

  • A “friend, employer, or family member” who seems overly-concerned with their whereabouts or is otherwise controlling

Be prepared to provide as much information about the situation as possible, such as:

Location

Town, state, place within town (hotel, bus station, nail salon, etc.)

Below are ways you can empower your community to help themselves and others from human trafficking.

For Neighborhoods

Do you notice any unusual, out of the norm type of activity or condition? One of the best actions to help with identification of potential human trafficking, or other criminal activity, is to know your neighborhood. Find out about the neighbor down the street that you do not regularly see. Establish a Crime Watch, so all the neighbors get to know each other and can watch out for unusual activity within the neighborhood.

For At Risk Individuals

Spotting someone who is at risk for being exploited can be hard, but the indicators are there. To help spread awareness, be open about human trafficking with others. If you do approach an at risk individual make sure they know you are coming from a place of love and care. You can empower others to look out for potential at risk individuals as well and increase community watch. Read the frequently asked questions.
